The Tradition of Dumplings

Dumplings can be found all over the world in different shapes, sizes, and textures.  One of the most famous types of dumplings is the Chinese wonton.  Wontons are very versatile: they can be fried, steamed or boiled and can contain a wide variety of fillings.  Though traditionally wontons contained minced pork and shrimp wrapped in an egg noodle, they have evolved to include vegetables for a healthy twist!

In China, wontons are not only a delicious everyday meal, but also are rooted in tradition.  To celebrate the Chinese New Year, families make dumplings because they are in the shape of Chinese gold, which symbolizes wealth.  Traditionally, families will hide coins in the wontons. Whoever receives the wonton with a coin will have good luck in the upcoming New Year.
